Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Learning the importance of conserving our natural resources, students continue to gain an appreciation for how our individual actions can affect the environment and our entire planet.  Deepening our understanding, students have been learning about the 3 R’s:  reduce, reuse, and recycle.   Today, we extended our learning by visiting the City Landfill and the Franklin Recycling Center.  Approaching the landfill, we discovered where all of our trash goes. Students participated in a presentation demonstrating how landfills are constructed and maintained.  Did you know our landfill will be filled in just 20 years?  From the landfill, students traveled to the recycling center, where they became “Eco-Heroes.”  Summit first graders learned how to identify what items can be recycled, how to sort them correctly, and the types of products they can be transformed into.
