Numbers to 20

Summit first graders have continued to build number sense.  Topics covered thus far include Shapes and Patterns, Ordinal Numbers, Numbers to 10, Number Bonds, Addition Within 10, and Subtraction Within 10.  Currently, students are working on Numbers to 20.  Manipulatives as well as visual or pictoral representations are presented first, providing students with concrete understanding of numbers and operations.  In this unit, students have begun by counting, writing numerals, and writing number words.  Then, they progress to working with  part whole relationships, solving number bonds, and arranging numerical sequences.  Place value concepts are embedded as students work with tens and ones, comparing quantities.

Word or story problems, emphasized at the end of each unit, deepen students’ understanding of mathematical concepts as they apply their learning to solve problems.  In addition to magic squares and number codes, problems similar to those listed below  have proven to be particularly challenging for first graders.

  • Solve the riddle to guess the correct number. “I am less than 9-5 but more than 10-2.  Who am I?”
  • Fill in the missing numbers. ___ – 3 = 7 – __ = 2
  • Complete the pattern 19, 16, 13, __, __
