Learning about weather fronts today, students read, discussed, and experimented to compare cold and warm fronts. Through our reading and experimenting, students discovered that air masses are large bodies of air that have a specific temperature and amount of moisture. They learned that these air masses can be cold and dry or warm and moist. They may move quickly or slowly, and when they meet, they form a weather front which brings changes in weather. First graders were eager to welcome Mr. Powers who guided is in a demonstration illustrating warm and cold air masses meeting to form a front. Using warm water with red food coloring to represent warm air and cold water with blue food coloring to represent cold air, students observed what happens when air masses meet. Students learned that at a warm front, warm air masses push against cold air masses bringing slow or gradual changes in weather. They found that at a cold front, cold air masses push against warm air masses bring more sudden changes in weather.
