Digestion Simulation

Mr. Powers joined first grade this morning where students participated in a digestion simulation.  Using a ziplock bag and orange juice, we created a stomach with stomach acid.  Then using our hands, to simulate our mouth and esophagus, we “ate” crackers, banana, and bread.  As the food entered the stomach, students took turns squeezing the contents.  Then, using a small cup and pantyhose, our food moved into the small intestine where the nutrients moved through the lining and into our blood.  From there, our food moved into our large intestine, represented by a paper cup and was excreted from the body.
