Yesterday, first and second grade students partnered together to begin a mini-unit on the upcoming solar eclipse. We began by posing the following question, Why are people making such a big deal about the solar eclipse?. Through a Mystery Science exploration, students then viewed several brief videos, partnered with one another to discuss ideas, and shared thoughts with the group. They determined what will happen during the solar eclipse, how rare the event itself is, and of course, safety measures. After the mystery students began a variety of learning stations relating to the eclipse. Working in small groups, with each team lead by a second grade student, they made books (choosing to write or draw) about the eclipse, created masks and acted out the eclipse, partner read books about our solar system, assembled solar eclipse models, practiced patterning as they strung “special” beaded bracelets, and painted solar eclipse shirts. We’re ready for Monday!
