Throughout first trimester, first grade students will engage in a variety of activities to build number sense. What is number sense? To put it simply, number sense refers to one’s ability to understand what numbers mean and how they relate to one another. As we build number sense in first grade, students will perform mental math, deepen their understanding of symbolic representation, and apply number knowledge to real world situations. We’ll use visual models (number lines, ten frames, number bonds, domino patterns, etc.) and manipulatives (counters, unifix cubes, dice, dominoes, etc.) to support our learning. This week’s number sense lessons and stations have included number puzzles requiring students to match numerals to quantities represented in a variety of formats, a math packet focused on numbers to 10, numeral writing in the form of an August calendar and 100s chart, identification of numerical patterns, rote counting (forward and backward) from a given number, making comparisons of given quantities, and skip counting (2s, 5s, 10s, etc.) to 100 and beyond.
