Throughout first trimester, in math, first graders will not only focus on deepening their understanding of number sense, but they will also be exploring geometric concepts. Today, through the text When a Line Bends a Shape Begins, we began learning about two-dimensional shapes. In our studies, first graders will be asked to recognize, name, describe, build, draw, compare, and sort various two-dimensional shapes. We will begin by learning about basic two-dimensional shapes (circle, triangle, square, oval, rhombus, trapezoid, pentagon, hexagon, octagon) and then move onto additional shapes (polygon, quadrilateral, parallelogram, decagon etc.). Today’s geometry related stations included IXL two-dimensional shapes, Play-doh shapes, and pattern blocks.
