Energy and Solar Ovens

We began our day learning about energy.  To start, we read aloud Energy:  Heat, Light, and Fuel.  Through the book we learned about different kinds of energy including kinetic and chemical .  We discovered how energy can make things hot, bright, or loud, how energy can make things move, and how energy can be used to do work.  We discussed how energy works and where it comes from.  In our reading, we discovered most of our energy comes from the sun, from the food we eat to the energy found in fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, and oil).  Focusing on the energy from the sun, first grade students worked in teams to construct solar ovens.  Then, we harnessed that energy by placing our ovens on the patio to cook a special snack, s’mores.  We will continue learning about sun power and renewable energy next week.
