How to Make Paper

How a House is Built is just one of the many “How to” read alouds first grade students have shared. We will learn more about author Gail Gibbons this spring.

In recent weeks, first grade students have been exposed to a variety of procedural or how to texts.  Students are practicing using the reading strategy of visualization to understand how to sequence a process.   Through visualization, students are encouraged to “make a movie in their mind” as they read.  First graders are asked to use what they already know about the topic to help make pictures in their mind.   Working on comprehension skills, students are sequencing events.  They are encouraged to use words such as first, second, next, then, and last.  Identifying and using these transitional words, we are able to connect our learning, linking math and literacy.  Further integrating  content, this week, using recycled paper collected from our own classroom, we followed the steps similar to those in How to Make Paper to make our very own paper!  Once dry, we will make book marks for each student. We’ll use this experience to inform edits and revisions to the how to writing pieces students are currently working on in writer’s workshop.
