States of Matter

This week in science, first graders have been learning about states of matter.   After watching several brief videos, students were asked to classify items as a solid, liquid, or a gas.  Students partner read fiction and nonfiction selections, Matterville and Matter is Everywhere, and sang a states of matter song to the familiar tune of “The Wheels on the Bus.”  Using their bodies, students became molecules, moving about as solids, liquids, and gases.  As solids, they were packed closely together with little to no movement.  After being heated up they turned to liquids, spread out and increased their movement.  Finally, as a gas, they began moving rapidly about the room.  This movement was replicated in a science/art project in which students used hole punches to represent the molecules in solids, liquids, and gases. Enjoying a special treat, complete with each a solid, liquid, and a gas, students drank root beer floats!
