The Grouchy Ladybug

First grade students are learning about all about insects. Characteristics of this animal classification include having six legs, an exoskeleton, wings, and three main body parts (head, thorax, abdomen). Using favorite children’s literature, we have explored fiction and nonfiction texts.  Students enjoyed shared read alouds of  Ladybugs by Gail Gibbons and The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle.  They have worked in pairs to read Incredible Insects and practiced reading related skills by matching and writing about key vocabulary words and completing an informational chart .

Reading aloud The Grouchy Ladybug, we connected our study of insects to math concepts of measurement by beginning to explore time.  First grade students worked independently to create their own clocks.  They added a minute hand, an hour hand, and five minute interval tabs.  First graders will continue working on telling time to the hour, half hour, quarter hour, and minute.  They will also be exploring concepts of elapsed time.
