Flintknapping

Yesterday, first graders joined fourth and fifth grader for a flintknapping demonstration.  Derek McLean, a graphic designer by trade, shared his knowledge and skills with Summit students.  First graders were enthralled, and our intended half hour presentation extended an additional thirty minutes as Mr. McLean demonstrated his abilities to create arrowheads, throw spears, and make fire.  Connecting the presentation to previous learning, Mr McLean discussed the significance of flintknapping in Native American culture while answering numerous questions posed by our students.  A huge thank you to Ms. Gentry for organizing this event for our students!
