Today was nothing short of a super busy day but gosh did we have a great day!
Summit first graders started off their day by loading up on the shuttle and traveling with Kindergarten friends over to Missouri State University. While at Missouri State, we engaged in some Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) activities! Some of the workshop activities we got to take part in were crafting traditional sugar skulls, make beautiful papel picado, and also make Mexican cempazuchitl flowers. We also were able to view an authentic alter, which are used to commemorate departed loved ones.
This afternoon, students took on a STEAM challenge of building the tallest free-standing structure with just candy corn and toothpicks! After mapping out their plans, first graders were anxious to dive into the project! However, students were quick to discover how fragile candy corn can be but they did not let this stop their building! We talked about the importance of perseverance and what to do when your plan doesn’t work out. Students applied what they were learning about their candy corns (which ends work better, toothpicks stay better on the flat sides instead of round edges, etc, and were able to construct some great towers!
The end of our day took a surprising turn when we came back from art and realized the Candy Corn Bandit had visited our room!! For those who might not know, the Candy Corn Bandit is a halloween friend who likes to play tricks and take other people’s candy!!!! In place of our missing candy bag was a stack of small books, a page about predictions, and our first clue. We opened up our books and were instructed to make predictions about where the Candy Corn bandit had hidden our treat! We discussed that a prediction is a guess you make about the way something might be in the future. With this information, each student made predictions about where the candy disappeared to. We opened up our first clue, read the riddle inside, and discovered we needed to head to the lunch room next! We also found clues in the PE hallway, on the playground, in the Lower School library and another one in our classroom! We found our last clue hidden with the candy in my teacher book box! As you can guess, we were so excited to have found our missing treat!
