The Three Sisters

Over the past week, we have began to dig a little deeper into our Native American unit and are exploring the Eastern Woodland Native Americans.  The Iroquois lived in the Northeastern region of the United States.  While learning about the Iroquois, we talked about Native American legends and students learned about “The Three Sisters.” “The Three Sisters” is a legend told by the Iroquois tribe about corn, beans, and squash.  These crops were often planted together.  They could not only be eaten fresh, but also dried and stored for future use.  To go along with our learning, we constructed a project with corn, beans, and squash.  Upon completion of that project, students documented different foods eaten by Eastern Woodland Native Americans in their flip books for their portfolios.
