Doubles

Before winter break, first graders focused on learning their doubles addition facts, as well as many other addition strategies.  This week we focused heavily on learning our subtraction doubles facts.  An addition doubles fact repeats the same addend, adding a number to itself, where as a subtraction doubles fact is any number minus itself.  Using manipulatives, first graders are practicing combining and taking away groups of the same number.  Working with flashcards, poems, fact families, and games allows students to reinforce and apply their understanding of this addition and subtraction strategy.  We also had the opportunity to use our common space and have a friendly competition to see which team could fill out their doubles addition AND subtraction facts first!  Below are two links to videos showing our relay race!
