L Blends

This week we will begin working on consonant blends.  A blend is made up of two consonants in which each sound is heard, but they are blended together.  We compared this to putting two letters in a blender and mixing them together to make one sound!

Today, students brainstormed a list of words that begin with one of the following l-blends:  bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl.  Each child then selected 5 words for their weekly spelling list, as well as recording the 5 new high frequency words. We will complete several word work activities this week using l-blends including sorting by the type of l-blend, reading books focusing on l-blends, reading poems with l-blends, and searching for l-blend words!
