Landfill and Recycling Field Trip

Learning the importance of conserving our natural resources, students continue to gain an appreciation for how our individual actions can affect the environment and our entire planet.  Deepening our understanding, students have been learning about the 3 R’s:  reduce, reuse, and recycle.   Today, we extended our learning by visiting the City Landfill and the Environmental Resources Center.  Approaching the landfill, we discovered where all of our trash goes. Students participated in a presentation demonstrating how landfills are constructed and maintained.  We were also able to see a truck of trash unload on the “tipper”.  First graders were shocked at how much trash came out of that truck!!  From the landfill, students traveled to the Environmental Resources Center, where they became “Eco-Heroes” and learned all about recycling!  Students pledged to do their part to care for our environment.  They learned how to identify what items can be recycled, how to sort them correctly, and the types of products they can be transformed into.
