During the week of Halloween, first graders did an animal study about bats! There are many myths and stories about bats so we took the time to learn about these wonderful animals and debunk the rumors we have heard!
Bats are mammals and they are the only mammals that can fly. They live in most places throughout the world but they do avoid extreme hot and cold. Most bats eat insects, flowers, or fruit. The only bats that drink blood are vampire bats. However, a vampire bat’s bite is so small that the larger animal hardly feels it. Bats are nocturnal animals, meaning they are more active during the night. Although bats do have great eye sight, they use echolocation at night to see.
First grade students compared and contrasted birds and bats using a Venn Diagram. We also looked closely at the different parts of a bat as well as the bat life cycle. We concluded the week by learning about other animals that are nocturnal, as well as animals that are diurnal (more active during the day).
