Opinion Writing

First Graders have been exploring the topic of opinion writing.  We have read a variety of text that have lead to students sharing their opinions through writing.  When working on their opinion pieces, first graders use graphic organizers to prepare their thoughts.  Each student states their opinion, gives reasons to support their opinion, and then concludes by restating their opinion.

Today we read, “Duck! Rabbit!”.  This is a fun book that shows an animal in two different forms.

After reading this book, students graphed their personal opinion and we took some time sharing some reasons why we thought what we did!  Sharing our opinions and reasons out loud was our form of prewriting, or preparation before writing.  Tomorrow we will begin crafting our writing pieces!

Be sure to ask your kiddo if they thought the animal was a duck or a rabbit and what reasons they have to support their opinion!
