Last week, 1st graders and their families had a wonderful time wrapping up our 2nd trimester with a STEM themed celebration. Throughout the entire school year, first graders have been exploring and engaging in a variety of STEM activities in the classroom with me. However, during the 2nd trimester, we are lucky enough to have the Upper School science teacher, Mr. Powers, come and do a weekly STEM lesson. In these different lessons, kiddos learn about and engage in different science, technology, engineering, and mathematic activities! These lessons also provide the students with opportunities to build on their problem solving skills as well as learning how to use teamwork!
On Thursday, 1st graders and parents had to put on their thinking caps and tackle 4 different STEM challenges. They had to create a raft that would float using only masking tape and as few candy hearts as possible. They also had to construct a catapult and measure how far they could launch candy hearts! We also used nonstandard forms of measurements to compare lengths of different items and stacked candy hearts as high as we could and graphed our results!
