Today is Election Day! While first graders might not be able to cast their own official ballot at the polls today, they were able to cast their ballot at The Summit! Yesterday, first graders learned all about how and why we vote, including important terms such as “ballot”, “poll”, “candidate” and more. They also learned the importance of the secret ballot and respecting the opinions of others.
Today, they got to put their knowledge of voting to use by casting their ballot in our very own mock election. As with a real election, students were required to present their voter ID, wait in a socially distanced line for their turn to vote and cast their ballot in secret. Of course, they received their “I Voted!” sticker at the end!
Students voted for their preferred presidential candidate and for Classroom Amendment 1. Classroom Amendment 1 was as follows:
Should first grade students be required to run or walk one lap before beginning their recess?
Based on election results, Classroom Amendment 1 was passed 8 to 6.
Lines were long at the first grade polling place today, but every voter successfully cast their ballot!
