As part of our spelling routine, each week first graders focus on a specific phonetic pattern and words that contain those patterns. We create a class generated list of words that fit the phonetic pattern, and students select their own list of words that are appropriate for their level. Students also learn high frequency words, selected from Rebecca Sitton’s High Frequency Spelling List.
First graders practice their spelling words in class each day by exploring the spelling pattern and practicing writing and using their words. However, students also benefit from practicing their words at home as well.
Practicing spelling words is more than just writing the words multiple times. The goal is for students to learn to recognize the high frequency words, and be comfortable with the spelling pattern of the week. And, spelling can actually be fun! Try out multiple methods of practicing the spelling words and patterns, until you find what works for your child.
Here are a few fun ideas!
-Write the words in rainbow colors.
-Use magnetic letters or Scrabble tiles to build the word.
-Draw words in the air with your finger.
-Use dry erase markers on the window or mirror.
-Create a salt tray (salt on a cookie sheet works well!) and use a finger to draw spelling words.
-Write in shaving cream on the table.
-Write the alphabet on the driveway using chalk and jump from letter to letter to spell the words.
-Build the words from PlayDoh.
-Write the letters of the words on clothespins, then clip them onto a notecard in the correct order.
