We began our author study of author Nancy Carlson last week. Nancy Carlson writes books that teach children skills to cope with difference challenges such as overcoming anxieties, taking responsibility for their actions, having a positive attitude, saving money, and more. First graders learned a bit about Nancy Carlson before exploring some of her books. We read Sit Still! as a class and discussed the illustrations. Then, we watched a video of Nancy Carlson explaining the characters she uses in her books. We recognized the character from Sit Still! when she drew him!
The next day, we read aloud I Like Me! ABCs. This book gave us the perfect opportunity to talk about adjectives. Then, students identified three positive adjectives about themselves and wrote about why they liked themselves. To go with our writing, we did a guided drawing self portrait.
