Pumpkin Day - Part 1!
First graders are having a surprise “Pumpkin Day” today! We are still early in our day, but already having so much fun!
We started the day with pumpkin-themed morning work and new pumpkin pencils. Writing is even more fun with a special pencil!
First up in our pumpkin activities was pumpkin carving! Students voted on which eyes, nose and mouth to use on our class pumpkin and then Ms. Ursino carved their selections.
After we carved the pumpkin, of course we had to touch the guts! Students could feel the outside of the bag, the inside of the bag (the actual pumpkin guts!) or say “no thank you”. By the end, even the ones who started out with “no thank you” had changed their minds and decided to touch the gooey pumpkin inside the bag. 🙂 So much fun!
Next up, we used our observations from watching Ms. Ursino carve the pumpkin and touching the pumpkin guts to come up with a list of pumpkin adjectives. First, of course, we learned what an adjective was! We practiced saying “An adjective is a describing word!” in different voices. Check out the list of great adjectives students came up with!
Finally, we rounded out our morning with The Pumpkin Man Dance by Jack Hartmann. We have so much more fun ahead this afternoon! Keep an out for future blog posts about our other pumpkin-themed learning and fun!
