Compost

As part of our study of the environment, first graders have been reviewing what can go in the recycling vs what must go to the landfill. On Tuesday, first graders learned about another option for keeping trash out of the landfill – compost! Did you know that food waste is the largest category of trash in landfills? About 25% of landfill space is taken up by food waste!

Students learned how compost works by watching a video from a composting facility. We learned about all of the different components needed for compost to turn food back into dirt. After learning about compost, students worked in teams to sort materials into their appropriate bins.

After learning about compost, students practiced their writing skills by writing in their journals to answer the question: “What is compost?”. They practiced using correct capitalization and punctuation, spaces between words and phonetic spelling. Finally, students shared their writing with the class. Sharing their writing with the class helps students get excited about their writing, hear ideas from their peers, and practice presentational skills.
