Ms. Ursino’s favorite form of precipitation is snow! This week, as part of our study of the types of precipitation, first graders learned lots about snow!
On Monday, we learned about symmetry. Did you know every snowflake is unique and almost all of them are symmetrical? Students created their own unique and symmetrical snowflakes by folding a sheet of origami paper into small triangles and cutting out any shape they wanted. No two snowflakes created were alike, but every one had symmetry and they were beautiful!
On Tuesday, we got out the InstaSnow for some sensory spelling practice! Students practiced drawing their spelling words of the week in our “faux snow”. In the afternoon, we learned about the life cycle of a snowflake by reading the book It’s Snowing! by Gail Gibbons.
On Wednesday, we explored fiction writing and making a text-to-self connection by reading the book The Snow Globe Family by Jane O’Connor and then imagining what it would be like if we lived in a snow globe! Students practiced the steps of the writing process by brainstorming their idea, making a first draft, editing, illustrating and publishing
