Money, Money, Money!

First grade students are currently embarking on an in-depth unit about money. To begin, we reviewed recognition skills, asking students to name and identify coins and their values. We sang along to money themed songs and compared the size, color and design of each coin. Students have been using dollar and cents notation daily in our Calendar Math during our morning meetings and practicing writing it at teacher table. Thus far, students have enjoyed learning about pennies, quarters and dines and then investigating themselves. In the coming days, they will take an in-depth look at nickels and then continue working on identifying and counting coins, playing money related games and singing songs about the different coin values. Once students solidify their coin identification skills, they will practice adding and subtracting coins, finding equivalent groups of coins, and exchanging coins.
