Today was Global School Day of Play, and The Summit proudly joined thousands of schools around the world in a day dedicated entirely to unstructured, screen-free play. While play is something we value every day at The Summit, Global Day of Play gives us a special opportunity to pause our usual routines and shine a spotlight on the powerful role play has in children’s growth, creativity, and well-being. Through play, students build social skills, problem-solve, collaborate, take risks, and develop independence, all while having a whole lot of fun!
We celebrated on Tuesday with a full day of joyful exploration! Lower School students had access to a variety of themed play zones throughout the building, including areas for creativity, movement, dramatic play, building, and more. Students were free to move between classrooms and common spaces, follow their interests, and engage at their own pace. Some favorite activities included fort building, board games, makerspace creations, and hands-on STEM. It was wonderful to see students inventing games, negotiating roles, and working together across grade levels. We even had a snack station complete with popcorn from The Alamo movie theater! Yum!
Despite the snow on the ground, we also made time to head outdoors, because fresh air and movement matter in all conditions! Kindergarteners through fifth graders played side-by-side, strengthening community connections and learning from one another in a relaxed, joyful environment. The day was filled with laughter, creativity, and meaningful moments of connection that reminded us all how essential play is to learning.
What a wonderful day full of fun, learning, and community-building!
