This week, first graders dove into learning about the rainforest and its layers. We began with a class discussion about the different layers of the rainforest: the emergent layer, the canopy, the understory, and the forest floor. Students shared their thoughts about what kinds of plants and animals might live in each layer based on the characteristics of the habitat that layer provides such as trees, vegetation, flying space, water sources, etc. Next, we got to see some beautiful visuals of the canopy layer by watching a National Geographic video showcasing the creatures that call this part of the rainforest home.<\/p>\n
Then they put their knowledge to the test! Each group got a stack of pictures of rainforest animals and worked together to determine which layer it belongs in and organize them on their team’s poster. They considered both the features the layer and the characteristics of the animal. This interactive challenge encouraged critical thinking, reinforced what they have learned about the rainforest\u2019s unique structure, and allowed them to practice teamwork and compromise. After they sorted the animals, Ms. Ursino went layer by layer explaining each animal, its name, its special characteristics, and why it belonged in its particular layer.<\/p>\n
Taking our learning a step further, students worked as a whole class to create a giant poster of the rainforest layers including vegetation and animals. Using a large sheet of butcher paper, they colored and labeled their layers, focusing on including the correct types and amounts of vegetation in each layer. Students used nonfiction books to reference for added information and ideas.<\/p>\n
