{"id":5361,"date":"2017-12-05T14:07:40","date_gmt":"2017-12-05T20:07:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thesummitprep.org\/1st\/?p=5361"},"modified":"2017-12-05T14:07:40","modified_gmt":"2017-12-05T20:07:40","slug":"the-iroquois-of-the-northeast-woodlands-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thesummitprep.org\/1st\/2017\/12\/05\/the-iroquois-of-the-northeast-woodlands-2\/","title":{"rendered":"The Iroquois of the Northeast Woodlands"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">The Iroquois of the Northeast Woodlands<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.native-languages.org\/northeast.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"209\" height=\"231\" \/>Over the past week and a half, students have learned many things about the Iroquois. \u00a0They have discovered the region where the Iroquois lived, the Northeast Woodlands, and learned about the tribe&#8217;s clothing, food, and shelter. \u00a0Specifics on each are listed below. \u00a0Please note that many artifacts and projects we complete throughout our study of Native Americans will remain at school as we are assembling individual portfolios. \u00a0We will showcase our work at our second trimester parent celebration.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\"><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Longhouses<\/h2>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clipartkid.com\/images\/524\/over-them-today-longhouses-are-mainly-used-for-ceremonial-purposes-JRQbHF-clipart.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"321\" height=\"197\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Students have learned the Iroquois built long, narrow buildings called longhouses. \u00a0Longhouses were made of upright logs and cross poles covered with elm bark.\u00a0 Students enjoyed creating individual longhouses, using construction paper to simulate the bark exterior and drawing diagrams of the interior.\u00a0 In their diagram, students were asked to include a second floor for food storage, multiple rooms partitioned with deer skin to show that many families lived together in one longhouse, and shared fires with smoke holes above for ventilation.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Wampum<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/wampumbear.com\/Aa_Hudson%20Bay%20Belt%20Hamell%202.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"462\" height=\"156\" \/><\/p>\n<p>First grade students have learned about wampum, or beads the Iroquois used for trading. \u00a0Traditionally, wampum was made from small purple, white, and black shells woven together into strings or belts. \u00a0Images or designs were crafted to tell stories from long ago. \u00a0Students enjoyed creating their own wampum wishlists, bracelets, patterns, and designs.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">The Three Sisters<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.almanac.com\/sites\/default\/files\/squash-corn-and-beans-the-three-sisters-of-native-american-agriculture.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"296\" height=\"222\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Finally, students have learned about &#8220;The Three Sisters.&#8221; Important crops to many Native American groups, the three sisters consisted of corn, beans, and squash. \u00a0These crops were often planted together. \u00a0They could not only be eaten fresh, but also dried and stored for future use. \u00a0 Discussing &#8220;The Three Sisters,&#8221; students read and illustrated poems.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Iroquois of the Northeast Woodlands Over the past week and a half, students have learned many things about the Iroquois. \u00a0They have discovered the region where the Iroquois lived, the Northeast Woodlands, and learned about the tribe&#8217;s clothing, food, and shelter. \u00a0Specifics on each are listed below. \u00a0Please note that many artifacts and projects [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":6,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-5361","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
