\"\"This week, first grade students have begun learning about linear measurements. Introducing the topic, we read aloud\u00a0How Big Is a Foot?<\/em>. \u00a0In the story, the king set out to make a bed for the queen by carefully using his feet to measure the needed width and length of the bed. \u00a0However, a problem occurs as the carpenter uses his own feet to duplicate the kings measurements, and the bed is too small. \u00a0After the story, students took off a shoe to trace their own feet to measure. \u00a0They compared measurements, discussing the difference between non-standard and standard units of measurement.<\/p>\n

As we continue our study of measurement, we will be working with nonstandard (paperclips, unifix cubes, etc.) and standard (centimeters, inches, feet, yards) \u00a0units to measure various classroom objects. \u00a0We will compare\u00a0quantities determining which items are longer, shorter, taller, higher, or wider than others. \u00a0Using tools such as rulers, tape measures, and yard sticks, students will practice measuring accurately, comparing units, recognizing and using abbreviations, and estimating.<\/p>\n
