Since the beginning of first grade, parents might have noticed a heart written next to some words on their students\u2019 High Frequency Words on their spelling list. \u201cHeart words\u201d is the phrase we use to describe irregularly-spelled words that have parts that can not be sounded out or spelled using our normal phonics knowledge. These are words that students need to know by heart because they appear often in reading and writing.<\/span><\/p>\n

This week, all three of our high frequency words were heart words that have the same \u201cheart part\u201d. Our words are would, could<\/em>, and should<\/em>. In all three words, we can sound out the beginning sound and ending sound using the phonics knowledge we have. The middle of the word is the part we must learn by heart in order to spell them correctly. By practicing these words in a meaningful way, students build fluency, confidence, and a strong foundation for reading and spelling.
