Saving Sammy

Cooperation, collaboration, and compromise are skills practiced every day in second grade.  What better way to start the year than to develop these skills and eat gummy worms at the same time!

Our mission, save Sam!  Sam (gummy worm) is stuck on a boat, how he got there is not important, but Sam can’t swim and the boat (clear plastic cup) is capsized!  To get to shore, Sam needs to retrieve a life jacket (gummy Life Saver) from underneath the boat so that he can float to shore.  The students had to save Sam by retrieving the life jacket from under the boat and putting it on Sam. Unfortunately, the only tools they could use to accomplish this task are paperclips. (1 per person). They could not touch Sam, the boat, or the life preserver with bare hands.  A great deal of problem solving, creativity and fun was had by one and all.
