Understanding place value (or not understanding it) will follow students through their mathematics journey.\u00a0 Without this understanding, students often struggle with\u00a0regrouping,\u00a0adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers, and more difficult computations.\u00a0 However, being able to say that 635 is 600 + 30 + 5 does not, in and of itself, mean that a student understands place value. Place value encompasses not only position and value of digits but also decomposition of numbers and a number\u2019s relationship to other numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Place value is taught as early as in kindergarten, and as students learn about larger numbers, the concept of place value continues throughout the middle grades.\u00a0 It can be a difficult\u00a0concept for young learners to\u00a0grasp, the reason\u00a0being is that\u00a0students often begin with rote counting \u2014 1, 2, 3, 4 \u2014 before learning two-digit and three-digit numbers and to a child, the 1 in the numbers 1, 10, and 100 often mean the same thing, though place value dictates that these numbers are vastly different \u2014 the place value of 1 in the number 1 is one while the place value for 1 in 10 is a group of one ten while the place value for 1 in the number 100 is a group of ten tens or one group of one hundred.<\/p>\n<p>To simplify this skill, students need opportunities to experiment.\u00a0 These experiments allow students to gain a hands-on understanding of how place values function in the larger mathematical world.\u00a0 In our second grade classroom, we have been experiencing a great many of these hand-on opportunities.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3388\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3388\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3388\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thesummitprep.org\/2nd\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/11\/IMG_0597-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"We began our study of place value with base 10 blocks, hands-on concrete manipulatives that support our understanding.\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3388\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">We began our study of place value with base 10 blocks, hands-on concrete manipulatives that support our understanding.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3374\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thesummitprep.org\/2nd\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/11\/IMG_0574-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0574\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3375\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3375\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3375\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thesummitprep.org\/2nd\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/11\/IMG_0572-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"We then manipulated number cards (including commas) to create 4, 5, and 6 digit numbers.
