Each group chose a topic to explore and then worked together to showcase their understanding of the five main text structures: description, problem and solution, compare and contrast, cause and effect, and sequencing.<\/p>\n
The groups selected three topics: School, the Ocean, and Komodo Dragons. Each student took responsibility for writing a short section using one of the text structures.<\/p>\n
Here are some highlights of student work:<\/p>\n
School (Description)
“School is a place where kids go to learn new things. School can have many different classes such as math, PE, music, Spanish, and writing. Sometimes teachers send homework home with students, so the students can continue learning even when they’re not at school. There are religious schools, non-religious schools, homeschool, online school, public and private schools. Schools need faculty and staff to run properly.”

Ocean (Compare and Contrast)
“Mount Everest and the Mariana Trench in the ocean are both famous. One is the tallest mountain in the world and one is the deepest trench in the world. The trench is 36,000 feet deep and the mountain is 29,000 feet tall. They are both extreme environments.”

This project not only gave students a chance to practice different text structures but also encouraged collaboration and research skills.<\/p>\n
