Choosing Books! !

During our Reader’s Workshop, we have been reviewing what it means to be a strong reader before, during, and after reading. We have been learning the importance of having the necessary behaviors, skills, and strategies needed to grow as a reader. One of these skills is the ability to choose an appropriate book. We used the acronym PICK (see the poster below) to help us decide which books we may like to have for our next great read. After reviewing how to choose a book, students explored the classroom library, perused a “What should I read next?” list, and reviewed their Tower of Books/40 Book Challenge book list to create a list of books they would like to read.

Please continue supporting your child in their reading by helping him/her explore book interests and expand their reading skills by being purposeful when choosing books to read. Along with choosing interesting books, it’s also very important that students feel confident in their ability to understand the topic and comprehend the characters and events of the book, so that they stay engaged and interested in the entire text.

PICK stands for: Purpose (What is the purpose for reading? Is it to seek information, or is it to read for pleasure?; Interest (Is this book interesting to me?); Comprehension (Do I understand what I am reading?); and Know (Do I know the words in the book?).
