"Life" with Multi-Digit Computation

As part of our mathematics unit on addition and subtraction with regrouping of multi-digit numbers, students played a game similar to “Life.” Starting with a balance of $30,000, students then moved throughout five rotations, where they were given a career and salary, an opportunity to “play” on a game show, a choice of one of five experiences to partake in, an item from a “toy store,” and a roll of chance in the game “High or Low.” At each station, students subtracted or added a new amount to their existing balance, with the goal of the game to end with the highest balance. Along the way, “fines” and “rewards” were given to students that caused their existing balance to fluctuate.  Practicing our multi-digit computation skills was so much fun in this game, and many students asked to go back through the rotations to play again.
