Exploring Measurement

As we are finishing off our addition and subtraction unit, we are beginning to explore measurement concepts in the 4th grade. First, we watched two BrainPop videos that explained the difference between the Customary and Metric systems of measurement. We then reviewed and practiced area and perimeter, which involved measuring the perimeter of our desks and the area of the square desks. We found the perimeter of our desks pushed together, as well. Our next task was to expand our ruler skills by creating holiday trees using area and perimeter to create rectangles on paper. This was a challenge for us as we learned how to hold our ruler straight while drawing a straight line, find centimeters on our rulers, and recognize the relationship between centimeters and millimeters. Final touches will be made on our holiday trees next week!
