What Lives in Our Big Backyard??

When you walk into our backyard here at The Summit, do you think you will find more producers, consumers, or decomposers? Well, wonder no more! The 4th graders have discovered the answer for you!

Today we explored the backyard in search of all the producers, consumers, and decomposers we could find. Many of us thought we would find more consumers (an organism that eats other organisms to survive) than any other organism. However, most of us actually found many, many producers (organisms that make their own food, usually from the energy of the sun) and decomposers (organisms that breaks down and returns nutrients to the environment by decomposing dead stuff and poop). Students used iPads to photograph these organisms and discovered more about what actually lives in our backyard. We found many organisms in the pollinator garden, where students turned over tree stumps and discovered spiders, ants, worms, a centipede, and many maggots! Take a look at everything we found!
