Constitution, Complete Sentences, and a Crocodile

We hit the ground running this week in 5th grade.  In history, we polished up some classroom rules for our Class Constitution and brainstormed some rights that students have in the classroom for our Bill of Rights.  We finished up this activity by signing these documents, thereby agreeing that these will be our behavioral guidelines for the year.

In Writing, we discussed the differences between complete and incomplete sentences and played a game that focused on making complete sentences.  We also discussed the various formats that writing can take and dissected some writing prompts to figure out exactly what they were asking the writer to do.

In Reading, we started our unit on folktales by reading “The Monkey and the Crocodile” from India.  We will read many stories from all over the world, focusing on setting, common folktale characters, morals, and how these stories reflect the culture that generated them.
