New Word Studies

The fifth graders got their new spelling/word study lists this week.  After last week’s practice round with some more familiar words, we will be diving into some new and interesting spelling rules.  As a general rule from now on, students can expect to see a new set of words that demonstrate a new spelling pattern each week with a spell check on Friday.  The fifth graders really dived in by working with each other to sort their words and figure out the spelling pattern.

We also finished our projects on the First Americans and the fifth graders got to play each others’ games (pictures coming next week).  With those projects wrapped up, we’re moving on to a unit on maps!  We started off by discussing why it’s so hard to accurately depict a round globe on a flat surface – sometimes it causes weird things to happen!  Is Greenland really as big as Africa?  What is with this funky M-shaped map of the world?
