Discussing, Depicting, and Dealing with Data

In math this week, the fifth graders have been discussing data.  We began by learning how to find the mean, median, mode, range, and outliers of a data set.  Then, we spent time investigating different types of graphs and charts – frequency tables, line plots, pictographs, line graphs, and bar graphs.  Students collected data for, made, and analyzed all these different types of graphs.  Throughout, we discussed what graphs are useful for, which kinds of graphs are better for showing off different types of data, and how to make graphs and charts more useful for depicting data.  One of the super fun side effects of a graphing unit has been what we learned about our class as a whole!  We collected data on favorite foods, favorite sports, family pets, siblings, and many other things!  It has been great fun learning about our class through numbers and graphs!  The average number of pets in our class was much higher than we expected!
