Informational Texts – Purpose and Tone

This week in reading, the fifth graders have been reading and discussing informational texts. We discussed identifying main ideas and details.

We also spent time today learning about the different purposes of texts and identifying clues that give away that purpose.  Was the text written to inform?  To persuade?  To entertain?  How do we know?

Lastly, we’ve discussed tone.  What kinds of words, phrases, and grammar make writing more or less formal?  When is it appropriate to be more or less formal?  The students created posters to help us remember some of these clues.
