There is quite of bit of overlap from last week’s “what we’re up to…” post (since the icy weather had a rather large impact on our time together last week!). So, this is what the 5th grade is up to this week…
Writing: Finishing up our poetry unit! We will be studying poems from Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, and Amanda Gorman. Students will be completing their “Where I’m From” poems and an anthology to highlight their favorite poems that they have written this year.
Reading: We are having our first reading group meetings for the novels we just started. Students are assigned to 1 novel (either Bridge to Terabithia, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, or The Witch of Blackbird Pond), and are responsible for completing the assigned reading and writing assignments before participating in their group meetings. They also have have the option of reading any or all of the other books (and also Wonder) and participating in the other reading group meetings as they want to.
Spelling/Grammar: Sentences. Declarative, interrogative, imperative, or exclamatory? Simple, compound, or complex? Complete, fragment, or run-on? We’ll study them all!
Science: We’re working on our end-of-trimester project! And playing with magnets. Stay tuned for our End-of-Trimester Celebration!
Social Studies: Students are giving their explorer presentations while we’re learning about Spanish, French, British, and Dutch exploration of North America.
Math: Multiplying and dividing numbers with decimals.
