Monday was a big day!<\/p>\n

First thing in the morning, we start our days with a morning meeting.\u00a0 Here, we discuss things like growth mindset, managing emotions, maintaining focus, and interactions with others.\u00a0 This week, the focus has been on “situational appropriateness” – I also call it “applying your appropriate filter.”\u00a0 Behavioral expectations change depending on our environment – a restaurant, at home, class time, recess, on the bus, etc..\u00a0 This week, the students have been working together in groups to order behaviors from most important to least important in different circumstances.\u00a0 For example, the students put the following behaviors in the following order when on a field trip:<\/p>\n

  1. following directions<\/li>\n
  2. using your filter<\/li>\n
  3. being productive<\/li>\n
  4. being kind to others<\/li>\n
  5. having fun<\/li>\n
  6. compromising with others<\/li>\n
  7. interacting with friends<\/li>\n
  8. being comfortable<\/li>\n
  9. making people laugh<\/li>\n
  10. getting rest<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    This activity ended up being a great forum to discuss what each of these behaviors means in different circumstances.\u00a0 Students pointed out that “following directions” made it easier to do other behaviors like “compromising with others” and “being productive.”\u00a0 We also compared this hierarchy to one made for recess (“being productive” fell to the bottom while “using your filter” and “following directions” remained near the top).<\/p>\n

    Later in the day, we attended a fire safety demonstration put on by some Springfield firefighters.\u00a0 They discussed the importance of fire safety while cooking.<\/p>\n
