Over the last two weeks, we have been focusing on an important skill: story retell through play. Doing this helps students develop a deeper understanding of sequencing and character roles all while engaging in creative exploration. Last week we had fun retelling the story Five Green and Speckled Frogs. This week we focused on a simplified version of the story The Hat by Jan Brett.
The Hat is a picture book about a hedgehog named Hedgie who finds a mitten that drifted away from a clothes line. As Hedgie tries it on, it gets stuck on one of his quills. One by one, his farm animal friends ask Hedgie about the mitten and decide they need something similar of their own.
We started by recalling the animals in The Hat and coloring each animal. Then, we placed the animals visiting Hedgie in order from first to last. Once we became familiar with the story, we transitioned to the favorite part: acting it out! Each student was assigned an animal to act out from the story. We used scarves to symbolize the clothing items that each animal collected to be just like Hedgie!
Have a wonderful break!
