SNOW DAY! Monday, January 30th, 2023

Snoopy's Snow Day! (Peanuts)

We have another snow day today!  Below are a few ideas for you and your Early Learner.  These are just suggestions.  I hope you enjoy your day!  Please stay safe and warm!

1.  Build a marshmallow tower!

Building marshmallow towers can be a really fun indoor snow day activity for any child or an effective team-building activity for siblings. All you need is a bag of marshmallows and some spaghetti (or toothpicks) and then let your child get creative. They have to stick the spaghetti into the marshmallows to create a tower, geometric shapes, buildings, whatever they can come up with.

2. Slime

When it comes to kid’s crafts, homemade slime is one of the best ideas! It’s easy and quick.  Early Learners always have SO much fun playing with it!

  • 8-ounce bottle Elmer’s white school glue
  • 1 1/2 – 2 Tablespoons contact saline solution, more as needed
  • 1 Tablespoon baking soda
  • Food coloring, optional

Add glue and food coloring to bowl. Squeeze the bottle of glue into a bowl. Add your food coloring if desired, and stir until combined. Then mix in baking soda.

Mix in saline solution. Add 1 1/2 Tablespoons saline solution and mix until combined. If it’s too sticky, add 1/2 Tablespoon more solution at a time. The more you add, the thicker it’ll be. The less you add, the slimier it’ll be.

Knead the slime. Using your hands, knead the slime until it holds together. It will be wet and gooey at first, but just keep kneading until it all comes together.

Store slime. Store slime in a container with lid, or in a zip top bag. The slime is best to play with on a place mat.

3. Snow play dough or DIY snow

White playdough is surprisingly easy to make and so much fun for kids! All you need is 2 cups of corn starch and 1  1/4  cup of unscented white hand lotion or conditioner. Mix them together in a bowl and you’ve got a moisturizing dough that’s fun to mold. Add some silver glitter if you really want to get fancy. Have your kids make indoor snowmen and decorate them with items they find around the house (buttons, sequins, ribbon, etc.). Kids love this fully hands-on sensory activity

4. Puppet show

Another fun indoor activity to do with kids is to put on a puppet show! You can make puppets with materials from your recycling bin. Or, you could make sock puppets from all those single socks you have lying around! Or you could use stuffed animals and dolls you already have at home. Help the your child come up with an idea for what the show will be about and then let their creativity shine!  This is also an amazing activity to share with family and friends on FaceTime or other video chatting app. You don’t have to leave your house and you can bring some joy to others from a safe distance!

5. Have A Special Storytime

Fill a basket of your favorite books and cozy up for story hour.

Have a wonderful day and I hope to see you tomorrow!
