American History to 1877

High school students are continuing their study of American colonization by examining the many different groups who attempted to settle. They’re making great use of primary sources to understand the content, reading excerpts from Columbus’s journal, Aztec accounts of the Spanish attack at Tenochtitlan, and Bartolome de Las Casa’s account of the Destruction of the Indies. We’re taking time in these early weeks to ensure we use primary sources well, taking note of helpful quotations or statistics provided. We’re also not taking the sources as absolute truth – taking time to question motives and bias as we read. Their discussion has been impressive!
