Exploring A Gothic Science Fiction Fantasy

High School began their first novel unit this week; Mary Shelley’s classic novel; Frankenstein. This classic is unique for many reasons: It was written by a young woman and is considered to be the first Science Fiction novel although it also borrows from Romanticism and Gothicism in its approach. It has entered into the public discourse quite differently than it was originally imagined. I think it will be very interesting for them to learn the difference between the original and how popular culture has altered it.

The unit began with a timeline of Mary Shelley’s life and the tragic circumstances that influenced her work. We will continue this discussion throughout the reading of the novel.
