Kindergarten students have learned how to identify and count pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. While studying each coin, students learned about the obverse and reverse side of each coin, the images depicted, and the value. Students used songs, videos, slideshows, Boom Cards, and physical coins to practice counting and manipulating homogeneous and mixed groupings of coins. We utilized skip-counting skills and other strategies while counting. Students were then asked to create their own “pretend stores” in their homes to apply their knowledge. Students decided their own inventory and location, created labels for items in their store, determined price points for their items, and then invited family members to shop. As store owners, Kindergarten students counted their shopper’s payment to ensure it matched the price tag. Click on this link to see the stores in action!
